The History of The ZEN Initiative
Founded in 2025 by Shauntel Neal-Howe, The ZEN Initiative (Zoe Empowerment Network) was born from a deeply personal mission: to create a world where individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities are empowered to independently express their needs and build meaningful connections.
The inspiration behind ZEN came from Shauntel’s daughter, Zoe, whose journey illuminated the gaps in community inclusion and the need for spaces that foster belonging, independence, and joy. Zoe’s experiences navigating social environments sparked a vision for a program that would empower individuals like her to thrive not just survive in everyday life.
With over 16 years of experience in financial planning and analysis across mission-driven organizations and Fortune 500 companies, Shauntel brought both strategic insight and heartfelt purpose to the founding of ZEN. Her leadership roles at organizations such as the American Cancer Society and her board service with the National Down Syndrome Congress (NDSC) equipped her with the tools to build a sustainable, impactful nonprofit from the ground up.
The ZEN Initiative began with a simple but powerful idea: that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and fully included in every-day community life. Through programs like Living ZEN: Life & Social Skills, the organization provides hands-on learning experiences where participants practice real-world social interactions, engage in community outings, and connect with mentors who uplift and encourage them.
From coffee shops and libraries to parks and public events, ZEN participants gain confidence navigating social spaces, expressing themselves, and building meaningful relationships. The organization’s approach is strengths-based and person-centered, celebrating each individual’s unique abilities and potential.
Today, The ZEN Initiative stands as a beacon of possibility a movement that shifts perspectives from disability to empowerment. It is more than a program; it is a pathway to dignity, joy, and lifelong connection.
And it all began with Zoe
